About Us
The Story
The BedFoRd wOOL journey started with a mishap that led to a starting a business I truly love.
I’ve always enjoyed knitting, and several years ago I thought I’d make myself a nice new pocketbook. I bought some expensive yarn and “felted” it, which is a process of washing and agitating a fabric in hot water, to shrink it and create something more dense and durable (felt). Much to my displeasure, the material came out misshapen and seemingly unusable. Or so I thought.
A friend told me she had done the same thing, but had started cutting up the pieces to start creating other items. This got me thinking.
I started looking around and discovered the world of “upcycling”, which means taking an existing item and transforming it into something more beautiful. I was immediately hooked, and before long I was taking wool sweaters and making my own items. I was in love and have been doing it ever since!
The Process
It starts with a high-quality wool sweater. I clean it, felt it, and begin to hand-cut and sew. Before long, that previously-unwanted sweater becomes mittens, scarves, warm winter hats, holiday wreaths, Christmas stockings, iPad or Kindle cases, eyeglass holders, and pretty much anything else you can imagine.
It is a 100% environmentally-friendly process, because every piece of wool I cut goes into one of my creations.
The Best Part
It’s so rewarding to be able to take something no longer wanted and give it new life! While I most often use my own inspiration for items, I also take custom orders. So often my customers bring me the sweater of a loved one, and ask me to transform it into something new. Nothing gives me more pleasure than allowing warm memories of that loved one to live on, in a new way!
